Humor in the Home

The oh-so-brilliant-and-witty Raina of If the Lampshade Fits posted today about a whimsical mural in eternally happy designer Jonathan Adler's home. The gist of the post being that each home should have something humorous and interesting - hopefully, reflective of the inhabitants.

I couldn't agree more. Who wants to hang out in a home - beautiful as it might be - if it has no personality, no sense of humor, no, as I call it - good BS?

So, I got to thinking - does MY casa have a sense of humor? I'd hate to get all preachy about needing some aspect of tongue-in-cheek, if I couldn't abide by the rule, myself. So....

Meet Lou.
He has a special place of honor in our bar.

...And his nutrition-conscious counterpart, Saint Glutena.
Art is a great way to "hang loose" in design. So tell, me is there any comic relief at your casa?

Those are quite fantastic! Even as a Jew, I pray daily to St. Glutena.

In Casa de Cox, we have a large papier mache water buffalo who resides under a table in the living room.

great blog.. im a new follower and thought i'd say :hello!

i have a 2 month old in the house now and so the humor is slowly creeping in with little blue butterflies hanging from our ceilings to left over "happy birthday" balloons...best yet, we have a little piggie mooning sitting on our dresser, our sons first piggy bank.

I saw Raina's post and it made me think about what humor I have in my house, too. I have a few things, but my favorite is a paper-mache dog, posed as if he's scratching his ear, that just happens to look just like my real dog. karin

I totally agree! A space needs to look like someone actually lives there!

Oh my casa is like the home version of a Robin Williams comedic experience...some really great moments of levity but sometimes you just wish it would shut the eff up. I can't help myself, I love a gag and an item that makes me smile. At least I know my kids will love it even if some adults seem utterly baffled. Love Saint Glutena btw.

I was thinking about the same thing after I saw Raina's post (and PS Raina, can we see the buffalo please:) and will have to have a look around the old homestead to see what I can find- yikes...maybe my house is too serious:( Oh but wait....the giant life sized dust bunnies hiding under every piece of furniture should count right...
I love your little guys- very charming!!!

Bwah, ha, ha! I need a little "Lou" in my house. He rules. As for me, I've featured a toy from a happy meal that makes three different fart noises prominently on my dresser. He brings me joy daily.

Let's see...we keep our keep calm poster over the kids toilet. And a broken fertility god in ours. That should do it.

Bowing to St. Glutina...and Lou.
