So, yesterday, the Matters of Style gals posted on their newfound love of the black and gold combo. Their post stopped me in my tracks, because I've been itching to paint this french provencial desk we have in our living room.
We use it as a sofa/console table. It's a hand-me-down from Ben's grandparents, and he has expressed disdain over my attempts at a makeover. However, he's out of town this week...
Do you really think he could berate his 8-month pregnant wife for taking out her nesting instincts on an old desk, when it could bask in a lot of glory like this?
The MoS gurus went for a high lacquer look, which I AM fond of, but something tells me a flat black/extra-shiny gold hardware combo might feel fresh, too. Something like this..
I could also gold up the base of those wedding-gift buffet lamps I have, and update the shades. Whatcha think? While the cat's away, the mice DO play??? Honey, know you're reading this in Rio, so how 'bout it?

I think it would look fabulous!! Although I did paint stripes in my entrance hall when I was 8 months pregnant, loved it, came home from the hospital and told my husband to get some painters in immediately to get rid of those damn stripes....hormones...what are you going to do?
It would look fabulous. I am such a chicken and would wait for consent first though:)
I vote yes. And sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission! :)
I say go for it! What a great transformation waiting to happen!
I could even see a little handpainted Chinoiserie on the top of the desk, it would look so chic!
A modern antique!

Ooh yes, I love it~ do it! :-)
I say play on...he could never give you a hard time for your natural nesting instincts.
If your husband is anything like my fiance, he MIGHT not even notice. I think it would look really delicious.
Ooo, I really like the look of the black and gold. I think it would look great!
I think I am not in the majority here. I love the patina of the wood. It looks like a very good piece in cherry? I know you did not want to hear that but painting it will take away its character but I love the glo of older pieces and it takes years to get it that way. Someday black painted furniture will be dated but this piece in its original form will stand the test of time. Kathysue
I say paint it! I'm devilish like that! Your husband will be FINE with it! :) Especially once he sees how much you love it!
i think it would look great black w/gold hardware! you could definitely convince the hubbie it looks good AFTER it is done.
Hah! I'm all for painting this console table and I think a flat black would look great (we repainted Dave's childhood desk a flat black a few years ago and it's great -- I'd suggest going for an eggshell or satin finish though so it'll withstand a bit more wear and tear though)
I am with Blueprint, I always prefer to ask for forgiveness, not permission. I am sure it will look fabulous. Just don't inhale too many fumes!!!
Black and gold would be awsome! Go for it! Love your blog. You have a great story/adventure to share.
Yes. Ha. Matte black is my vote too.
Go for it. Can not wait to see the after effects. Hope you will post.
The black one is so classy looking. I vote for the paint!
Alison,
I don't know. Don't you think we have enough black and gold in the living room with the huge Velvet Elvis you just installed by the entrance? Is this pregnancy hormones talking again?
Your Loving Husband,
Ben
Ooh, looks like you have a PRIME candidate for a black and gold makeover! Would love to see it. And your red chairs look LOVELY in the background! Thank you for the mention and glad we helped inspire.
Love this idea! The black would modernize it some and would look fabulous with those red bamboo chairs I see in the background :)
Bluehydrangea's comment cracked me up!
I think hubby may be right....just might clash with the velvet Elvis
;)
Do it!! He'll love it!
