During my first pregnancy, our nickname for our as-yet-unnamed baby was "Bean." That February, Ben gave me this necklace for Valentine's Day - Elsa Peretti's Bean necklace from Tiffany & Co. I love the precious connotation it has for us, and still wear it all the time.
It was a gift that signified a very particular moment in our lives, so I was surprised awhile back when the hubster suggested I pick something out from "T-Fanny's" to commemorate this baby.
I'm not one of those women who expects a so-called "Push Present" (PP). I mean, isn't the baby gift enough? No judgments, just sayin'... So, when a general "commemorative" gift was offered, I didn't really jump on it - it seemed too much like an early PP.
HowEVAH, with Valentine's Day right around the corner, I've considered that maybe a sort of Love Token might suffice....Hmmm??? It's OK, if I'm being hypocritical, and it's merely a matter of semantics, you can let me know, but in the meantime...
Since I can't have what I'd really want from Tiffany, I'm skipping it altogether. You pay a premium for anything that comes in that little blue box, anyway!
Sundance always has a great selection of organic (albeit higher-end) offerings - I could succumb...

waterway ring
But, I also have a soft spot for unique, handmade pieces...
Geode earrings by irisjewelrydesign
Thing is...as lovely as all these pieces are, this exercise seems a bit phony. I don't even wear the decent jewelry I already own when we're here in Brazil - Federal Agent husband says it's a "security thing."
So, I think in light of my desire to have a "moment-appropriate" gift that I might actually have the chance to enjoy, I'll suggest a trip back to the Hippie Fair in Ipanema where we can pick out a fabulous piece of original, Brazilian art.Mmmm....yes, indeed!

I love the waterway ring and geode earrings, but I think the art would be lovely, too. How sweet of your husband to pick out the necklace for "the bean." :)
That bean necklace is so precious!
OMG that ring and those geode earrings.
and by ring i mean the gold and blue water ring thingy. i'll bet it is gorgeous on. drool fo sho.
That waterway ring is amazing! I hope you get something pretty to remind you of this new bean.
I think that's a great idea. Honestly, as much as I like jewelry, I never wear it. I'd much rather have something I could look at or use everyday. You'll probably get a lot more use and satisfaction out of a piece of artwork.
Hi Alison! Just had to comment - I stumbled upon your blog (while at work, oops) from Bryn's blog and I've really enjoyed reading! Keep it up. :)
such a sweet hubby! lucky lady! i love the rings, precious! when are you due?
The bean necklace is too cute! What a cute story! And I have to say I love the waterway ring. Have you every checked out fay cullen? They offer estate jewelry and I've been eying up a few of their pieces for my own PP (not that I really think they are necessary either!).
Love the idea as art for your gift -- it's just as personal as jewelry and everyone will get to enjoy it. Can't wait to see what you pick out!
Ah that waterway ring is too die for! So pretty!
but isn't this baby nicknamed "precious little diamond"??!
I'LL have your baby for that blue ring!! wowza! that blows tiff out of the water. pun intended.
I am loving the waterway ring. so pretty.
What a thoughtful hubs you have. Hope you find something that means as much as your bean necklace.
Ooooh I love the bean story..just precious...baby bean...lol..too cute!
Great selection of jewelery pieces...just gorgeous x
Oh I am such an art over jewelry person anyway....I like your thinking!
That waterway ring is beautiful! I might have to drop a hint to my hubby! ;) But the original Brazilian art is a fabulous idea, especially if you don't wear jewelry too often!
What a cute idea! I have the bean necklace from Tiffany's too and I love it!
Love the jewelry from Sundance - it's all gorgeous! And the bean necklace is so sweet. But, you can't go wrong with a good piece of folk art. Wherever it resides in your home, it will always remind you of your bambino!
I love the bean story - so sweet! I also LOVE the waterway ring and totally think it would be a lovely gift for in honor of the new baby. Even if your not a daily jewelry gal, it would be perfect for special occasions!
I have four kids and never got a push present. Now, my last baby was early and my birthday was only a few weeks later. Since his birth was and emergency situation, I ended up getting my b-day present early. Don't feel guilty about getting a "love token" just b/c your pregnant...take advantage!
Just found your blog! I agree I think the whole "push present" is a bit much. That said, my daughter was born a few days before Mother's day and I didn't complain about the ring they got for me!
