Floating Art Project

I've been itching to frame out a piece of art with a simple, acrylic frame. It's such a clean aesthetic that can really showcase artwork in a modern way. Jenny posted not too long ago about finding acrylic frames for smaller works, but I was thinking something on a larger scale...

We gifted my sister and BIL an original painting from Brazil, and while we were visiting them, it gave me the perfect chance to test the acrylic-framing waters.

I took the artwork to a local glass and mirror shop, and asked if they could cut two pieces of acrylic to "sandwich" the artwork between. *Note* I anticipated "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" looks, so I took the above inspiration photo for explanation purposes. ;)

I had them cut 1/4" (rather than 1/8") pieces for a more substantial look, and drill holes at each corner. Since I wanted a floating look, I had them size the sheets to allow about a two-inch border around the painting.

To hang the painting, I had to enlist Ben's help (of course!). He had to enlarge the drill holes a bit to allow for the brass screws we selected to hang the art.

If you try this, be slooooow and careful, so you don't crack the acrylic!

Next, we cleaned the acrylic of all fingerprints. He had a little "help." Note to self: next time, use latex gloves!

We used double-sided tape on the back of the painting to make sure it wouldn't slip during the hanging process.

We secured it all with brass screws through the drilled holes - straight into the wall (using drywall anchors). ......aaaaand DONE!

I'm lovin' it!

Nursery Design Comes Alive

Over the last nine months, I've been working with some favorite long-distance clients to design the nursery for their first baby, Oliver, who is due any minute. E-design leaves a lot of interpretive "wiggle room," and often, designers don't have a chance to see the space as envisioned. Being able to see a design come to life is incredibly rewarding, so I couldn't be more excited with how beautifully they realized my ideas for the Little Guy's special space.

The finishing touches have been made, and now, all it needs is a special little occupant!

We were going for a clean, subtle masculinity.

We commissioned the abstract art from blogstress extraordinaire and up-and-coming-artist, Jenny from MFAMB.

I couldn't resist sending them the tiny moccasins, handmade in Brazil.

My DIY Agate Lamps

I'm dipping my toe back into the blogging waters with this little project I've been wanting to share for some time. I'm sure I'm not alone in obsessing over the gorgeous lamps we've all seen made of semi-precious stone, agates and geodes. Bad News: those things are crazy expensive. Good News: The area of Brazil where we live is geode mecca - where dozens of quarries and mines are found.

I found some lamp-making kits through this seller on Ebay, knowing that with some awesome rocks, I could make my own glamazon lamps. On our last day trip to a little mining town, I snagged two, large (about 5 lbs each) amethysts for a really reasonable price.

I gilded the base of the rock with paint, and painted the lamp base red per Ben's suggestion. I had planned to go boring-black on the base, but am so glad I went with my hubster's opinion, as I love how the purple-red-gold color combo amps up the glam factor. Dontcha hate it when spouse's are right? ;)

As you can see, the rock sits in front of the lamp pole, which isn't quite the perfect-professional look I'd like to have, but it makes for a very simple project, and overall, gives the look I was going for. The lampshade still needs a little zhushing, too.

Yes, my bedside table needs some serious styling help, but you get the idea. A+ for effort, right?

Beneath it all, I feel a current of Hope. Your thoughts and prayers continue to lift my family, and it is all I can offer to wish you and yours a blessed holiday season.

Sadness

I try to keep this blog real, and in that vein, I feel I should share with you....

This week, we lost our Baby Girl. I was 27+ weeks.

Saturday, she was moving like a little acrobat - normal for her. Sunday, we spent the day busy doing projects around the house, so it wasn't until I was relaxing that evening that I realized I hadn't felt her move all day. We did the usual things they tell you to do: pushed around on my belly, ate some chocolate, but we couldn't get her to move. Monday, my midwife couldn't find a heartbeat, and an ultrasound confirmed our worst fear: she was gone.

We had enjoyed such a normal, healthy pregnancy - no different than my previous two. There was nothing to indicate a problem. Even the last ultrasound showed a normal brain, spine, heart, placenta - everything looks perfect. We are devastated and dumbfounded. We may never know what happened.

Right now, we are holding our other two precious girls even tighter, and doing our best to put our hearts in God's hands, trying to understand that our angel's mission was not of this world.

Right now, all I can think about is being with my family, and I ask you to please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

A "matchy-matchy" look I actually go for

I'm working with an e-client on the freshening-up of her living and dining rooms. She's having crown moulding and built-ins added, and my suggestion is to paint the wall and trim the same color, but with different finishes à la this room by Suzanne Kasler.

Nothing radical, but a nice twist, and a step away from traditional. Remember how Martha toned down the heavy (albeit impressive) moulding in one of her myriad homes with this pretty shade of blush? Splendid.

By keeping all this trim monochromatic, the room stays out of Fussydom

Bent on Burl Wood

Did you know burl wood is an abnormal growth found on a tree that has typically experienced some sort of stress - like insect or fungal infestation? Rather nice material for being an unwanted arboreal house guest, wouldn't you say?

I've been eyeing this particular desk/vanity/console made of burl wood and lucite for some time.

Highlighting Interior Photography

As I'm gradually accomplishing projects around my house, and planning to put together a portfolio of my interior styling work, I'm focusing more and more on what it takes to present a room amazingly. A professionally photographed space can take a less-than-extraordinary room, and with incredible angles and lighting, make it look straight out of a design glossy. A poorly-lit and photographed room, however inspiring it may be, will never earn its true merits.

I came across the work of Ashlee Raubach, who's photographs of interiors capture light and essence perfectly, creating a sense not only of a beautiful space, but of actually wanting to be a part of them.

Talk about inspiring!

Hacked by Hague

Well, it only took me about a month, but I can finally say I'm finito with the hack of my old, Ikea media cabinet. Thanks to the generosity of Kathy from My Interior Life, who sent me a color-match of Hague Blue, I was able to have my own Brazilian version made. The paint mixer here was so "impressed" with my ~~obsession~~ dedication to having it just right that he renamed my custom color "Azul Americana." I'll take that as a compliment. ;)

I also subbed in the same gorgeous, brass pulls we used on my sister's hack. They play very well with Hague.

The space above the odd-height cabinet will be earning some new artwork from Miss Jenny.

Loving that reflective finish SO. MUCH.

...and since we're starting Halloween weekend, I'll go ahead and show you the Before again - it's kinda SKEEEERY!

Living Vicariously: The New Furbish Store

It's pretty amazing when the opening of someone else's boutique gives you heart palpitations. But that's exactly what I'm experiencing after seeing Honey + Fitz's pics from the new Furbish store in Raleigh, NC - the brainchild of decorative artist extraordinaire, Jamie Meares.

I'm more than delighted to live vicariously for a few moments as I virtually go through the store and pick out what I'd take home. Although, it'd probably be easier to select items I wouldn't want to buy.

The entrance: the yum factor is just getting started.

A bubblegum sofa. "Oh, I couldn't." Um, oh, YES I could!

One of my favorite vignettes: layering art upon large, graphically-enhanced walls. Brilliant.

Evidence that I need a bit more animal in my life: leopard bowls...

Headboard: to die for. Ms. Meare's ability to layer and mix patterns: OFF the charts.

I'm working with someone who's guest bath is screaming for one of these custom, ikat shower curtains.

If you're into subdued/neutral and subtle. I dare say Furbish is not your place, but everyone's space needs a jolt of some sort.

I'm due a mommy getaway trip, and I'm seriously considering a mecca-like pilgrimage from Brazil to Raleigh. Anyone wanna meet me there?

A little bird (thanks, Anita!) clued me into the work of Kyle Bunting. Based out of Austin, Texas (which, by default makes him rockin' to me), this designer takes hides, laser-cuts them to perfection, and voila - turns out show-stopping takes on the traditional hide rug. Can you say quatrefoil, greek key, and chevron in hide? Yeah, I know.
By the time I went through all the patterns, there was a puddle of drool on my keyboard. I think the genius is quite obvious.
I'm partial to the nuances of color and texture in the neutral styles....

...but imagine I could be easily persuaded to work a bolder pattern into my own home.

Do we even want to know the price points? Probs not...but I've got an inquiry placed anyway. ;)

Now that October is in full swing, I feel I have permission to begin seasonal sprucing around our casa. I don't go all-out for the holidays in general, but I do love Halloween. This month, I'm playing hostess-with-the-mostess for a couple of small soirees, so I'll probably go a bit beyond my usual.
Avery is dying to decorate pumpkins, and I need a new centerpiece, so I'm thinking some blingy pumpkins might be a fun projecto.

Shameless plug of my food blog, here, but there's no question that there's interplay between food and interiors. There's great opportunity for a delish dish to influence style and/or a color palette, so let my food references drive you to ~~eat~~, decorate!

Taking a cue from this dish of Tandoori Pork I made, we can see the colors of Curry, Saffron and Cinnabar. Don't those conjur up so much more warmth and interest than Gold, Burnt Orange and Deep Red? JCrew was so ahead of their time, way back in the day, when they were the first to merchandise their clothing colors after luscious fruits and ripe veggies!

The Little Paint Swatch That Could*

Recall that I've decided to paint our ugly, old Ikea media cabinet, and I want to go Hague Blue. I tend to become very one-track-minded when it comes to these sorts of things. NOT a great disposition to have when you live overseas, and the product you desire is only available in The USA and Canada.
I think by the time it's all said and done, this project might qualify as an Act of God, because that's practically what measures are going into finding the closest match to "Hague." You see, this deep blue has many faces....

In a flat or satin finish, she appears fairly straightforward - marine-like blue with maybe a hint of gray.

I won't go into the finer details of the attempts I've already made to find a close match, but let's just say they do things a wee bit differently in the paint world of Brazil, and it hasn't been successful.
So, I did what all desperate bloggers do - made a plea to Stateside blogstress amigas, Kathy and Jenny - who both have first-hand knowledge of The Hague.
According to Jenny, Benjamin Moore makes two dead-ringers for The Hague:

So, armed with swatches of all three, as well as another from a Sherwin Williams colormatch, I will march down to my local paint store, and demand my right to some Haaaggguuueeee!

Oh, and I'm pretty sure an 'interpretation' of this painting needs to go above aforementioned media cabinet.

The other day, I hit the jackpot on Shannon's The Designer's Attic - scoring five yards of Schumacher Katsugi for 1/3 of the retail price. Designers and bloggers have been singing the praises of this loose floral for years, and I for one, am still on the bandwagon.

Now, I just need to decide what I'll do with it! Five yards is a good amount to work with, so I'm not even considering something small like accent pillows.
Tom Scheerer aka Katsugi King has used it to great effect in bedrooms... but my bed frame would hide a great portion of the skirt...

Curtains. Maybe. But I'd have to pull it together in a room scheme....

Fall Color Obsession: Saddle and Peacock

Every year about this time, it happens. That lust for all things Fall. I actually try to discourage my brain, since the seasons here in Brazil are opposite of the US, I have little opportunity to relish the fullness of the North American Autumn season, and it always leaves me a little remorseful.
Sometimes, I say to hell with it, and seek out the symbols of the season, other times (like this), they hit me - WHAM-O!

That was the case when I saw this image. Could the warm, saddle leather of the Wassily chair look any more fantastic paired with the peacock-blue of the small bureau?

To me, the colors read comfort, nostalgia, hospitality - all symbols of the Autumn season, and now, my official Fall color-combo obsession. For the record, I'd also throw in some deep, rich cognac, but balance it with a punch of chartreuse - much like this designer did.

I began scouring my house for an area I could work in the combo without doing a complete overhaul.
Living Room.
Coffee table - certainly not saddle leather, but the color is similar. Great.

Broken, and in need of H.E.L.P. Ikea media armoire: Not. So. Great.

Wow, you all were decidedly not interested in baby Oliver's to-be rockin' nursery. Four comments? ..and I worked my tail off on that board, too. Sads.

Well...how about this? We learned yesterday that baby #3 is another GIRL!! From the get-go, I figured we were destined to have girls, but I took one of those Gender Predictor tests, and it said Boy. So, I had sort of gotten used to the idea that we'd have an XY child in the mix. Turns out, I should've trusted my instincts, as an ultrasound tells no lie, and a baby girl it is. No worries, though, she's looking perfect, and we're delighted and blessed for that.

OK - how about some pretty rooms...The latest Lonny killed it. Sent me into some kind of design schizophrenia.

The house full of creamy (and in some cases, contrasting) neutrals have me seriously questioning my devotion to color...

...and then I spy glossy persimmon and aqua velvet (the fabric, not the aftershave), and I feel a tugging at my soul.

Lacquered walls - will we ever get over it? Not when it's this good.

So, where's a gal to source one of these lovelies? This version on Alice Lane is pretty, but will set you back nearly two G's. Pretty, but no can do.A quick search on Ebay yields some styles with potential. I'd touch this one up with a darker stain, and drop the leaves down to use as a great entry table for a small space. Still, it's more barley twist than truly curvy.

MLHP goes into the kitchen - My new Food Blog!

I mentioned some time back I was tossing around the idea of launching a food blog, and you all were so supportive, I decided to go for it!
My undergraduate education in Nutrition kind of makes this a no-brainer, but really, My Little Happy PLATE will chronicle my experiences in the kitchen - successful and not. Whenever possible, I'll toss in some useful, nutrition tips to earn my keep. And, me being me, I'll probably be unable to resist the urge to post a fabulous kitchen or gadget every once in awhile. Don't worry, though, the original MLHP isn't going anywhere, in fact, there's some great things in the works (and no, I'm not posing as Martha or GOOP ;)

The Making of a Gallery Wall

I posted last week about our family room more or less being the bane of my existence... My sofa overhaul is now on hold (pending a potential move and new sofa - Shhhhh! ;) But the large wall with big-but-not-big-enough painting had to be tackled immediately.

I had in mind an eclectic gallery wall - something along the lines of this...

Apparently, there are two theories to hanging gallery walls, and they correlate to Kevin Costner's thesis on the Golf Swing in the movie Tin Cup....

There's the plan it out, space correctly, nearly poetic placement method....

...And there's the "grip it and rip it"- basically throw it up on the wall, and hope it works method

Because I have no patience, and Ben is my architect - we went with the grip it 'n rip it model. (A bit of shuffling frames around on the floor was as scientific as it got)

I considered using mixed media (baskets and whatnot), but Ben x-nayed that, for fear of looking too cottage-y. He was right.

We "shopped" art we had around the house, not purchasing anything new. A few spaces are bare now, but I think it was a good trade-off.

Little by little...progress....

Updated Friendship Bracelets - All Grown Up

I don't remember my friendship bracelets from the 80s being as rad as these glammed-up versions from Frieda & Nellie. I love that the ethnic vibe of the traditional woven bracelet gets a kick in the pants with the rhinestones. Given my choice, I'd layer them up with a menswear-style watch, a classic oxford and strong denim. Shazaaam!

The Bold and Going-to-Be Beautiful

I've heard it said before if you love interiors, your home is always in a state of flux. There's always something new and inspiring, something to switcharoo for a change of scenery. I certainly fall into that group.
Truth be told, I'm least content with our current home. I imagine it's because our homes in the States were ones we selected and loved, while our home here in Brazil - nice as it may be - is one that was assigned from a housing pool. There's a lot I would like to change, but can't. **Is there anything more nerve-wrecking for a design junkie than having a lot of decorating roadblocks???**
Fortunately, we were able to bring all our own furniture, so I have some flexibility to work with and change it.
Hence, my obsession with redoing our TV/Family room.

I really, rullly cringe at the thought of posting this pic (my husband even said, "aren't you wanting to show your best work?", but I'm. Keeping. It. Real. (eek!)

Try not to be jealous.

So, on my agenda is:
* Possibly replace, or certainly reupholster the couch. (Velvet ranking very high on my wishlist)
* Camouflage all the media components. (Possibly a tailored skirt situation)
* Bring in more/better assortment of art for the large wall
* Buy new curtains that aren't expecting a flood (these are Ikea - washed after installation)
* Change out rug with one more size-appropriate
* Manage the kiddo epicenter

The room is very shallow, so I can't commit to an ottoman or coffee table option for flow purposes, but we would definitely appreciate something to prop our feet up.

In trying to round up a style aesthetic, I culled some of my fave Pinned images - and whadya know? Velvet couch takes the lead! But first:

I considered doing something like this - keeping the couch in a neutral, and working in lots of color and pattern elsewhere, but really, a fug couch is a fug couch, and must be put out of its misery.

Since our room has so much natural light, I would love to go really dramatic like this room BUT all walls must be white when we leave. *Arrggghhhh

Can you get OVER that peek of stripe inside that skirt corner? No? Me Neither.

This room is looking a bit too Trad for me, but I've made mental notes on the greatness of velvet + animal print.

Jewel-tones and a cacophony of ethnic pattern. No harm, no foul.

Again, honing in on my tireless love of ikat, and wishing I knew where I stashed my Indian wood block, so I could recreate those curtains.

That's two pics with humongo lumbar pillows! I love the pattern play they allow, but think they would do very little in terms of comfort.

Where there's a will, there's a way, and I have will to spare.

The Design Scene in Brazil

I dragged the Fam out this weekend in search of these ikat rugs I saw advertised in a local design mag. Not that I could come within an inch of affording one, but still, my eyes needed to witness this greatness in person.

Bummer. Turns out only the São Paulo location has them in stock. But, while we were at it, I figured I'd catch up on some Brazilian design.

Loved, loved, LOVED this grouping of theater-style pendants. I'd use them together like this as a type of light/art installation, or as singles to direct attention to other great pieces.

Classic, pre-worn Chesterfield yumminess. This one would set you back about eight grand. Ugh.

If you prefer vessel sinks and fantastic fixtures, then you would love it down here.

A painting I definitely could love in my home.

Mini Panton chairs. Nearly irresistible.

These bamboo garden seats were at a patio furniture store, but I wouldn't hesitate to use them indoors to bring in a natural element.

One trend I picked up on was large, LARGE lamps. You'd certainly need to know what you're doing to work with the scale on some of these, but oh, wouldn't it be fun?!

Yes, they used an entire tree trunk for this one.

And, last but not least, a table full of Buddhas....

I think it's the store's way of telling their customers, "Hey, you just dropped a butt-load of cash, but it's all gooooood."

Hacking Update: That's more like it! *Updated with paint color

My ~~sister~~ ahem, client sent me pics of the improved color of her dining room buffets.

Remember, these are Ikea's Edland two-drawer chests - which have good lines to begin with.

But, nothing much beats a few coats of high-glossy plus extra lacquer for funsies. Oh, yeah, and some stepped-up hardware. **The paint color is "Daring" by Sherwin Williams - and it was professionally sprayed. We found the Indian hardware at a local antique co-op.**

The first go-round was a little pinky-peach....

While our goal was for true coral. Check it with the chevron kilim and fuchsia velvet.

Some finishing touches are in store, but I'd say this room is well on her way to outright fabulousness.

DIY Gemstone Finials - kinda of a duh...

I've been keen on the design world's general fascination with all things geode and agate over the recent past. It just so happens the vast majority of these goodies are mined right here in Brazil. This weekend, we took a road trip to the gemstone mecca where we waded through piles and piles of all things lapidary.

I've been wanting to work some of the "positive-energy" pieces into a project, but figured I'd start off small...

So, I ordered these project-ready lamp finials with prongs from this Ebay seller.

...and picked out a few choice crystals from the piles (Sure you could unearth similar finds on Ebay as well)

...a little hot-glue gun action to stabilize everything

...and my lamps got a little facelift. (I can feel the energy, already! ;)

Rockin' Rio Hood

I was instantly smitten with the rustic-yet-elegant, shotgun-style home of architect Luciano Cavalcanti that was featured in the latest issue of Rue. The exposed beams and brick combined with the whitewashed walls is not a typical style you see in Brazil - at least not that I have seen.

On further reading, I learned the home is located in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. A charming and Bohemian area teaming with the color and life one pictures when they imagine the tropical city.
...also where they filmed some of the honeymoon scenes for the upcoming Breaking Dawn (November, peeps. You haven't forgotten, have you???)
Back to the house.....

Curveballs and Crossroads

You all have been so patient with me this summer (I thank you!). First, I skeeted up to Texas for five weeks with nary a Hello between guest blogger's posts, and now that we're back in Brazil, I've been doing good to show up once a week.

I hate it when that happens. For whatever reason, or multiple reasons, sometimes the blog takes a hit - meaning, it takes a serious backstage to Life. That's as it should be, right? Still, I feel like I've got some 'splainin to do...

A few days after we arrived for our vacation in Texas we learned we are expecting Kiddo #3. I know you're probably thinking, "Wasn't she just pregnant?" Um, yeah, it feels like it. Our baby is 15 months old, now, but still - Tracy Anderson was just starting to make some headway with my Second-baby-after-35 body.

While I'm on it, I have a question to any mothers of many out there...By the third kiddo or so, did you look pregnant, like, immediately? I'm now 12 weeks, and I swear - I wake up three months pregnant, but by bedtime, I'm five! Gravity and fluids are not kind.

Anyway, we had considered having a third child. This was just a leeeetle sooner than we planned. BUT, the way I look at it is A) a blessing and B) If we had waited, we would've decided two is plenty. This baby is meant to be.

However, I can't say it hasn't thrown me for a loop in terms of how and when I'll segue this blog into a business. A while back, I mentioned I planned to go back to school for Interior Design, but the truth is there are few options for me since I live overseas. The online degree programs are few and far between, but the real issue is: Do I really need to get yet another degree when I really just want to enrich people's lives and homes with beautiful décor? It takes talent and skill, but not necessarily formal education to do what I want to do.

I answer my own question with: It just might have to wait. It's tough. I compare myself and this blog against others who post beautifully crafted and well-planned posts every day, and who are quickly turning their blogs into bigger and better things. Most of them are in the career-first stage of their lives. I don't know too many women with three children under the age of five (my situation when this baby is born) who are at the top of their game professionally AND personally. I know there are some amazing souls who do it all. For me, though, something has to give. There's no question that I'll hold onto my dreams while I give my family 100%.

In the meantime, I'll keep plugging away, blogging as often as I can about projects I have going on, and things that inspire my creativity. ...And I still have that card up my sleeve about a spin-off, food blog. You know....in all my spare time ;)

I don't know about you, but I would certainly, most definitely want a cook to design my dream kitchen. If it happened to be one of my Chef crushes, as is the case with Tyler Florence, then it would be the proverbial icing on the cake.
Just caught these first glimpses of the Kitchen of the Year he designed with House Beautiful, and so far, so goooood!

I can totally feel the unpretentious-yet-serious foodie-ness that Florence captures with his recipes.

Well, I'm back home in Brazil, and I'm bummed to say we weren't quite able to wrap up my sister's dining room. It's coming together so beautifully with the glam hot pink velvet on the chairs, but the matching buffet situation gave us fits.

The Ikea chest we planned to hack was out of stock for a few weeks, but we did end up snagging a couple. Then, our paint selection came back more peach than the coral we envision....

However, check out hardware yumminess!

**A few people have asked/commented on the hardware. We bought it from a local antique Co-op that carries reproduction pulls, knobs, etc. It is heavy brass, and stamped "Made in India" if that might help you.

My Little H Spot: Daniela of Aesthetic Oiseau

My jaw dropped when I spied our next guest's H spot! Anyone else out there go batty over great art? Welcome Daniela of Aesthetic Oiseau (oh, and try not to stare!)

Hello MLHP-ers! When Alison asked us to share our H Spots, mine was a clear choice. Hands-down, one of my favorite things in our home is this fantastic painting by Alexandria, Virginia artist Murney Keleher.

As you can see, it is a vibrant hue of orange with the most lovely touches of turquoise and blue - and the subject matter is chairs! Perfect for this design lover. I positively adore Ms. Keleher's interpretation of this chair arrangement and am honored that such a beautiful piece from a local artist graces the walls of my house.

The painting sits in a very prominent position right as you walk into our house and living room. It's definitely a focal point and I find myself staring at it often. It's also the first piece of "real" art Carter and I purchased, so it has taken on sentimental value.

I have a set of dishes that I've collected. My grandma used to use a mish mash of china in her cottage for daily use and I remembered one pattern (wild clover) so vividly from when I was a little girl. She died when I was 8. Fifteen years later when I got married, there was only one dish left and I decided to start collecting a set and have found pieces online & in antique shops so that I now have a full set myself. The wild clover pattern on the plates is just so special to me.

I can't think of a sweeter H spot than one full of sentimental value. Thanks, Lauren!

Many people dream of beautiful kitchens, Jane from Modern Jane actually has one that was a labor of love - check it!

I'm Modern Jane and I'm super excited to be sharing my little happy spot with you today. I feel like my yard has been my happy spot this week with the great weather and the pile of yard work I've been doing. Although, it's mornings in my kitchen that make me most happy. It always feels so bright and fresh. I love standing in there in the morning making my stove top cappuccino. Ahh.. life's simple pleasures.

I especially love my kitchen because it was a labor of love. My brother built all of the cabinets. I primed and painted them. He even made me the counter top I dreamed of, out of pine boards. It's gotten a little banged up here and there but I think it adds to its charm.

The floors were covered in black and white tiles that we chiseled away one by one. Then, my Dad and I, punched all the nails from the sub floor back into the floor so that it could be sanded. I still can't believe that it came out as well as it did.

Hola, Peeps! Did I mention every time we take a trip to the States, we are unbelievably swamped? It's been so great having this time with family and friends, but this woman needs a vacation from our vacation! Last week fell into some kind of time warp, so we'll be doubling up on our "guestesses" this week.

First up is Lindsey, who blogs at Stay Young. Act Foolish. Be Happy. but who also happens to be one of my e-decorating clients. Linds and her husband upgraded to a larger home earlier this year, and she's been busy trying to make it cozy. We worked together on her grand family room, and it turned out amazing, but I'll let her tell it in her own words!

Hello everyone! I'm thrilled to be guest posting on MLHP today. Alison's little happies are always a treat and this series of the H Spot is nothing short of pure happiness.
In the last year we have welcomed a baby into our family, moved houses, and I've turned 30. All of those things have put a burr under my bonnet to re-do, re-vamp and re-fresh around our home. Currently, we have five rather major projects in the works and lots of loose ends to tie up. This one is just about complete, and I hope it makes you as happy as it makes me!
Here is a shot of our living room just before we purchased the home. The windows needed some attention and the room was lacking overall color.

We started with the fabric for the 18-feet curtain panels and then began layering and layering from there. It's not 100%, but I think it's looking much, much better!
This pair of wing back chairs were my parents from the 90's. They were quite a site in all of their Hunter Green glory and sadly, a before picture wasn't captured before their drop-off for a needed make-over.
They've been sitting in storage for a number of years, and I have finally convinced the mister that they would look fabulous in the new living room in a fresh white. As I look from my kitchen sink towards these windows, I love seeing these chairs sitting in front of the curtain panels and a family piece of furniture. It's just happy...

Can I just tell you how much I love a divine hack job? No need to waste more words: see for yourself as Naomi from Design Manifest shares her Hackadelic skilz!!

Hi Everyone! I'm just tickled to be sharing my little happy spot today. To be honest with you, my apartment is a complete disaster right now. I'm in the midst of about 4 projects. One of them involves wallpaper and has most of my furniture pushed away from the wall and floating in the middle of room. I also have a spare dining table, two extra BRNO chairs and a unused sideboard crowding up my living space. Not much happy about all of that. (Furniture hoarder, much?) I DO have one little corner that has been unaffected by my manic decorating, and that is my happy spot that I'm going to share today.

It's my Rast Hack.

I was inspired to add a little black/glam/Asian-goodness into my space. I adored this piece I saw at an auction, but didn't want to pony up the money for it. I know my way around an Ikea Rast cabinet, though, and thought I could hack my way to a little happiness.

I decided to go less ornate, and more with a subtle campagin-feel and I must admit I'm quite pleased with the result. It's just enough bling and drama without being over the top.

While they are waiting for their final destination (they are to be my television console,) I'm really enjoying them paired with my art and a few pretties. I was lucky enough to score this original piece of art from my grandmother's basement. The horse figurine is vintage and the lamp is from Arteriors Home.

Just looking at them makes me smile. Now if someone would just buy my BRNO chairs and finish up my wallpaper project I would be thrilled.

My Little H Spot: Kathy of My Interior Life

Hello, Peeps! Thanks again for being such a welcoming crew to our guests. The hits just keep on comin'....Here's Kathy of My Interior Life showcasing her H spot!

Thanks so much to Alison for having me over for a visit. I've always loved My Little Happy Place and was thrilled when she asked me to share what makes me happy in our home. Lately, I must say that I've been loving going over to the dark side. Meaning, I love the drama that dark/black paint can give a space.

First up, my front door.

It started out looking like this . . .

I just love the visual punch the black gives the door. We painted both the interior and exterior to make a bigger impact.

Next up is our powder room. It was a ruby red when we moved in four years ago, and I agonized over what to do with it. Paint? Wallpaper? I finally just bit the bullet and went with a very dark blue-gray by Benjamin Moore called Mysterious. Indeed it is . . . and I love it!

So, as you can see, going to the dark side can be a good thing. It was in my house and makes me very happy. Thanks again, Alison, for letting me share my little happy place.

My Little H Spot: Michele of My Notting Hill

Today's post is from Michele of My Notting Hill. She gives us a teasing glimpse into what I can clearly tell is a very chic home. I'm just tickled to know I had a teeny bit of influence on it!

When Alison asked me to do a guest post about a spot of my house that's currently making me happy, I couldn't help but think of the location for my new Nate Berkus stools. Why? Well, because if it wasn't for Alison's January post on these stools I would never have bought before they sold out. Here they are in their new home - anchoring the round table that is one of the first things you see when you walk in our front door and head into the living room. Our living room is a long rectangle and I love how the round table breaks up that feeling.

Here's a close-up of the stool. When I ordered them I thought I would most likely replace the fabric but I actually like the color and plan to keep it as long as it holds up. Love, love the style of the mod double base.
It also makes me happy to see these books and other bits when I walk in. You might be able to make out the little red paper heart underneath the small cloche. My daughter placed it there back on Valentine's Day and now it's a permanent feature.

My Little H Spot: Bailey of Peppermint Bliss

Many of you will recognize today's guest blogger, as her amazing and whimsical casa was featured in a past issue of Rue magazine. Yes, it's none other than Bailey of Peppermint Bliss. I'm not sure how Ms. Bailey was able to pick only one H spot, as her house is full of things that would make me happy!

My most favorite and special things in our home are our two lambs.

Lambar Odom who resides in our living room.
And Mabel who is our outdoor lamb.
Everytime I see them they cheer my heart. And they are always great conversation starters.

As in, "Why do you have a lamb in your living room/backyard?"

That question is usually an indicator that my house guest is kind of a bummer. However the questions, "Can I sit here?" or "What's his name?" tell me that we are kindred spirits, because honestly, why wouldn't you have a lamb in your home if you had the option.

Lambar Odom is considered the seat of honor in our living room, reserved for our most celebrated of visitors.

While Mabel guards our backyard, blessing the sacred ground with her golden hooves.

We are in the process of moving from Chicago to Austin and I have already staked out special spots for our lambfriends- and have big plans for adding to our herd.

I didn't think you'd mind me popping in (and bumping the H spot feature 'til tomorrow) for a little update on my sister's dining room - my project numero uno while I'm Stateside.

She snagged these Chippendale chairs a month or so ago, but clearly the pastel plaid fabric wasn't working with our overall theme of I'm not Laura Ashley.

THEN: Saturday's Thrifting Session took us to the Habitat store where she scored this wingback for forty clams.

It has a bright future.

As for me, I snagged this pair of mondo lamps. Hard to tell here, but they're actually mercury glass - a bronze color. Not sure where I'll use them just yet, but I thought they were different, and I couldn't pass up the ten dollar price tag.

Hi MLHP readers! It’s Carissa from The Fabulous Design File! MLHP is one of my very favourite blogs, and I’m totally excited to be here.

So… the area in my home that is currently making me happy is my chalk-board wall. It’s a huge wall that runs the length of my kitchen and all the way into dining room. The photos only show a snippet of it, because otherwise I’d have to reveal the hideous oak cabinetry that I haven’t yet painted. The chalk-board wall is my most recently completed project, so it’s new, and new things tend to make me happy. Here it is:

I couldn't decide between my horse lamp or sunburst mirror, so you get both!

I recently purchased this horse lamp from the HomeGoods for $29.99.

I am slightly obsessed with it.

Who knew a horse could bring me so much joy?

It sits on my credenza next to my television.

Luckily, it always behaves :)

I also can't help but smile when I see my DIY sunburst mirror.

Although it was a simple and inexpensive project, I love the way it turned out.

For some reason, a successful DIY always makes me giddy.

My Little H Spot: Linda of Lime in the Coconut

Summer is here, folks, and that means vacation! For MLHP, it also means a suh-weet guest post series. Over the next several weeks, we'll get a peek into the homes of some of our favorite designers and/or blogstresses as they feature their home's H-spot: Items or areas in their homes that make them happy on a daily basis, and really, what makes US happier than getting to stalk great casas?

First up is Linda from Lime in the Coconut. I'm, well, just a little coconuts, myself, over her high-style, tropical home.

When I contemplate favorite things in my house (which seems to change week by week) I often seem to come back to projects....inexpensive projects...and this week it is all about color! So thanks for asking Alison!

Last fall I came upon a five dollar lamp find

...It just needed a dose of something...so I topped it with a fab shade from anthropologie...

Turning the shade, I can even get different jolts of color

One of my faves this moment!

Another favorite is an old chair I found for pennies

...lovely lines...thought about just doing linen, but a great fabric fell in my lap...kinda literally...so I ran with it. Reupholstered it with my own little (bandaged and bloody) hands! Not everyone's cup of tea for sure...

...but I cannot tell you how cozy this big butt chair is to sit and curl up your legs and read...or gab...or contemplate your navel... And each morning waking up to see that little corner of happy as I go to make a cup of coffee... just makes my day!

And not to be left out...The corner on the other side of the room across from the chair makes me happy too...

an old mannequin from a friends clothing shop...discarded...now holds an ever changing array of beads and scarves. Color!

Color Inspiration

This week is nutso. Friday, we fly to the States for several weeks of R&R action. Well, I say R&R, but I should probably say running around trying to squeeze several months worth of projecting, shopping, eating, and visiting into a mere four weeks.

I really hope to hit the ground running on some things that need wrapping up in my sister and BIL's casa - one of them being their dining room. (pardon the lame-O iPhone pic)

Among other things, we're hoping to fill the space in the back wall with some sort of buffet/console, as well as add some much-needed focal color. The walls are Dovetail Gray by Benjamin Moore. We've been trying to come up with a vivid but complementary color, but I've been shying away from putting anything too predictable with the deep gray.

And then, it hit me...by way of a bracelet I designed...

Coral - all glossy and juicy.

For a console (or two) taking something like this....

...and hackety-hack hack hacking it into something so good you just might want to eat it. Ya with me?

Brazilian Road Trips, Birds and Non-Scientific Surveys

We took a little road trip this weekend to Rio Quente. The area (Southern-Central Brazil) is known for its natural, thermal springs, and there are many attractions centered around warm-water activities. Our destination was a water park - aptly named Hot Park - to let the kids scamper in the lazy waters while the Winter air temps are mild-to-cool.

The drive was longish, but amazingly-scenic...

The park is like an oasis in the middle of the Brazilian cerrado (High Plains)

...and, the girls had a great time wearing themselves out

Inside the park, there's also a bird preserve. Now, I have a thing with tropical birds, not a weird thing - I just think they're incredibly beautiful, and amazingly-intelligent. Every time I see one up close, I'm more convinced I want one as a pet.

My favorite - Mr. Toucan (If I had one, I'd name him Mr. T - original, right? ;)

Incredible Hyacinth Macaw.

Several of the parrots in the preserve were very friendly - LOOK at his coloring!

So, I was still in "bird-want mode" when I spied this ginormous painting at a local display. Ben said it belonged right next to the Velvet Elvis, but I think it was pretty amazing - especially given the scale. I picture it in a room with large, white walls (ahem, our casa), but without other tropical references. Balance it out.

So, tell me. Am I off my rocker? Has the taste side of my brain taken a vacation, too, or could this painting steal a room? Set me straight, Peeps!

Pin-Therapy

Please don't tell me you're not Pinning yet. "Pinning?" As in Pinterest - the interwebs' most delicious collection of all things imagery, and notorious vacuum of precious time? I could (and do) spend hours pouring over images - from delicious design I may have otherwise missed, to clever quotes and phrases - selecting my personal favorites to add to my Pin Boards.

To say it's addictive is entirely cliché, BUT after reviewing my collection of pins, I've come to the conclusion that pins just might be a window to the soul. OK, well it may not be a spiritual experience, but it certainly provides a clue as to what charms you, what defines your style.

Through the lens of my pins, I'm clearly not over yellow. I don't know what that says about my soul, but it sure does soothe me (in an energizing kind of way).

Custom Sofas on the Cheap(ish)

I've apparently been living under a rock. I only recently learned about the Custom Sofa Design website, where you can (as the name infers) design your own sofa. There are tons of styles to choose from, several grades of worthwhile fabrics, trim (like nailhead and contrast welting) and, even cushion upgrades like feather and down blend. So basically, you can work up your dream sofa like the pros, but drop significantly less cash.

**Update** They went out of business (wah waaaah), but are referring clients to Sofa Craft. It seems the options are similar, but there isn't the mind-boggling assortment of them. They also don't preview fabric samples, which makes it difficult to visualize.

The possibilities are limitless, and the range of styles could be used in any type of interior. Some of my favorite styles are:

I made these Orange Muffins. Well, actually, I riffed* a bit off-recipe according to my taste, and availability of ingredients. Made a bit of Orange Butter to up the ante. They are sunshine in your mouth!

*Part whole wheat flour, plain yogurt instead of sour cream, added flax meal, shredded coconut, and cranberries.

P.S. - Food blog sloooowly coming to fruition!

Art...How Bazaar!

If there's one thing I would recommend a design client splurge on, it would be art. Art is so personal, and for that reason, it's a wonderful way to immediately imbue a room with the owner's flair - a key element in making a space not just lovely, but unique.
I just spied the new art offerings in Serena and Lily's Bazaar - some are originals, others are more budget-friendly reprints.
Here's my top choices:

Pt Reyes 3 by Karen Smidth - Reminds me of a painting we bought in Arles, France, and gave to my in-laws (wish I'd a kept it for myself! ;)

RedSky by S. Paster - Perfect above a bedside table to bring in accent colors in an otherwise neutral palette.

Another Party by Sara Westover - Perfectly-whimsical for a child's room

Umbrella by P. Norwood - Because everyone needs a good beach scene.

Woman with Palm Trees by Victor Di Gesu - Clearly a reference to Matisse, but since I'll never own a Matisse, this might work.

Product Review: Overstock Chevron Kilim Rug

A few weeks ago, I spied a tweet by designer and fellow blogstress, Camila about a chevron rug on Overstock. As I'm still on the chevron bandwagon, I linked over to the clearance website, and found this: Chevron Kilim Rug...

The price was too good to pass up ($130 for my 5x8), especially considering it's a natural fiber (i.e. wool and jute) rug.
It arrived today, and I have to say I'm initially very pleased. Now, don't get me wrong, this was not an expensive rug, so it is not very thick, and I don't imagine the weave is very hearty, but it gives great impact, which is what I wanted. I also like that it has a more natural, textural feel - making it at least somewhat unique among the sea of chevron rugs out there.

For now, ours is making itself at home in our entry. (yes, I know I need a larger console)

So, to summarize: Chevron kilim via Overstock gets a thumbs-up for value and looks. Bad news: I think I probably bought the last one, as it was under "high sell-out risk," and I can no longer find it on the site.

Lesson: It pays to Tweet! Follow me if you're not already!

So, a few weeks ago, I coined the word, "Braziliant."
Brilliant + Brazil = Braziliant.
Contextual example: "You're so Braziliant, you don't even know it!"

Apparently, Essie - makers of can't-touch-this shades of nail polish (doesn't everyone wear Ballet Slippers for their wedding?), are apparently riding my wave.

Behold, Braziliant.

Described as, "a hot orange with a touch of shimmer."
What a perfect encapsulation of the South American soul. I do love the orange/coral trend.

Essie: I'll expect my royalty check forthwith.

Yo, yo - it's been forEVAH, hasn't it? I think I've mentioned before that Ben travels a lot. In fact, some days I wonder if we should just call him our "house guest." So, when he's finally planted on Terra Firma, we pour a little wine, and I make him look at pictures of rooms and give commentary while I type verbatim into a blog post. This is our idea of Date Night - it's really cool, or really lame, depending on your point of view, but it's how we bond over design. ;)
First out of the gate...

Ben: Well, the first thing that jumps out at me is the Doctor's office carpet - what's up with that? They go for this eclectic look, and then they cheap out on the rug?
Me: The first thing I notice are the lines of the frame holding all those pictures above the mantel. I'd like it much more as a mirror.
Ben: Well, those orchids will die up there above that fire.
Me: It's staged, you know.
Ben: Yeah, but they could make it a tad more realistic. And, I don't know about the skill level of the "stylists." Check out those wires coming down from the lamps. Not good.
Me: And here I thought it was the color scheme that would get you all fired up.

Me: I really kinda like this room - amazing natural light - but the mismatched lamps make me cross-eyed. I need lamps to be in pairs - at least in this room.
Ben: I really don't like the chandelier, I don't think it matches the room at all.
Me: This room is totally NOT about "matching."
Ben: This rug is much better than the one in the first pic, but I wouldn't hang out in this room.
Me: Agreed on the rug, but I could totally hang in this room.

Ben: This is a joke, right?
Me: No, this is someone's very expensive, marble bathroom.
Ben: Well, then I guess it just goes to show money can't buy taste. If there was a party, and you were a little bit buzzed, or even a lot buzzed, and tried to take a leak in this bathroom, you'd probably get vertigo and end up puking. And then crashing into that almost-invisible shower. Oh, and what's that in the tile pattern below the window? You know what I think it looks like?
Me: We keep it pretty clean here at MLHP...
Ben: Well, it rhymes with sha nay nay.

Ben: First Impression: Cardboard Model. You could make a cardboard model of this room. Very easily.
Me: You know, you're messing with the work of Steven Gambrel, no one messes with the work of Steven Gambrel.
Ben: All those patterns make me think I'm supposed to see an image after staring at it for a few minutes. Another vertigo candidate.
Me: I'm not a big fan of the earth tones, but I appreciate that he went beyond the usual white moldings look.

Ben: Kinda dig it.
Me: The high gloss, yellow ceiling just sings it for me. I'm loving all the attention given to ceilings these days.
Ben: Why would you put the back of a chair next to a fireplace? I just think the room should center more around the fireplace.
Me: Point taken, but I think without seeing the rest of the room, I'll assume it all works out.

Ben: Why do you always pick out such oddball rooms to show me?

Me: I don't think they're oddball, I just pick rooms that seem to have a lot to discuss. Why don't you pick out a room?

....24 hours later...

Ben: OK - here's a room I really like. It happens to be in San Miguel.
Me: Aww, sweet - where we were married. What is it you like about this room?
Ben: I like that it doesn't look so "decorated." I like the white walls. A lot.
Me: So, you don't like it when interiors try so hard? You prefer there to be not as much of a "look."
Ben: Right. Interiors don't need to be over-thought. I mean, look, that old sconce thing fell off the wall, and they just said, "Screw it. Put it on the table, then."
Me: You know, some might argue that it actually takes more talent to pull off an "un-look," and still have it be very stylish and appealing. These owners are skilled designers.
Ben: OK, whatever, but that's my two cents.

Gradeschool Crush

I have a crush on these gradeschool-reminiscent trough sinks that are popping up all over the place. If I were working with someone redoing a shared, sibling bathroom, I'd be all over it like white on rice. Ditto for envisioning a bath for my own girls.

Turns out that its pedigree isn't all that lofty - it's a Kohler model, the Brockway, offered by Home Depot. The arched, showerhead-looking faucet is the Cannock. The three-faucet model, plus faucets and accessories like the soapdish will set you back nearly 2Gs - bummer - but I'd argue the classic and whimsical style is worth the heavier price tag.

Obviously, you can take the style all-out Cottage...

...but, I tend to like where this vintage-with-a-twist look is going.

Clearly a no-brainer for kids who need as much area to catch splashes as they can get.

Mom and Dad could use a sleeker, more Victorian version...

Wonder who gets to use the mirror?

*Update* - Raina to the rescue! The kitchen is in fact a Lonny kitchen, but I guess H&H is doing an editorial of the same space.

While I await the goodness of the glossy gods, let's recap a few H&H kitchen oldies but goodies. Note: Ginormous. I realize the size may be skewed, but that's still a really large working (stove/fridge/sink) triangle to muster. Also, is that a brass pot filler amid all that stainless? If so, touch of warm metal = goodness.

Bold yet beautiful. Obviously not worried about resale potential.

Fancy pants. It's alright, though. If you wanna go JLo in your kitchen design, I'm good with that. Just have me over for one of the espresso's that baby back there can whip up.

Minimalist Art Collector knows what he's doing. Hope he doesn't mind splatters.

Velvet in the kitchen. Possibly the most impractical application you could imagine for the fabric. Does that make this kitchen smug?

Contrast painting of mullions is delightful. Marble subways, no complaints. Stainless countertops = noise and a lot of dull knives.

All-time favorite.

Also, I'm thinking of starting a food blog. Would you follow? Need a clever name, though...
